Penango – secure encrypted email w/ attachments for Gmail, Google Apps and Zimbra

Penango - secure emails

Penango - secure emails

Penango is a successor to free Firefox extension Gmail S/MIME, which let's you send encrypted emails using Gmail, Google Apps mail and Zimbra. As Google Apps or Gmail is not HIPAA complaint though it is running over Secure HTTP (HTTPS) protocol.

It comes as a Firefox, Maxthon and Internet Explorer extension.

Unlike Gmail S/MIME extension for Firefox, Penango is not going to be free but if you want to send signed emails (using email certificate) which are encrypted then I don't see any other alternates for Gmail or Google apps users.

See Penango's seamless integration with Gmail service, you can easily setup this for your Google apps email account too.

What all you need is download Penango extension for your browser and get free email certificate. That's it you'r ready to go. So far I am not sure about the licensing or pricing policies as Penango has not been publicly available so far.

Here I am providing you download information I have received while signing up for trial, you can either go and sign-up yourself or download Penango extension for your browser.

Download Penango from following location for your browser:

jQuery Magnet Multi-Select List – DG Magnet Combo

jQuery dg-magnet-combo (no CTL+Click Select/List with just one line)

jQuery dg-magnet-combo (no CTL+Click Select)

Basically I wanted to write this plugin since long long time but could not get a while to hold and push my thoughts as a code to form this plugin. As the name suggests (which seems kind of difficult to understand the real purpose of this plugin) it does not deselect existing option when one selects another option in multi-selection list/combo-box.  How does this sound? Yes, w/o having your control key pressed. Basically I have been found of changing the default behavior of the html controls and with this new jQuery Magnet Multi-select List plugin, I will continue this trend. If you have already understood the meaning and purpose of this plugin you can move to plugin-usage without reading more boarding story about the plugin.

One would say that it's very easy you just have to hold the CTL key while selecting another option in combo-box but it's going to be very irritating when you have hundreds of options in your list and you have to select multiple out of them one of them is on top and the other one at the end of list, which makes it keeping that CTL key difficult and if one misses out CTL hold for a while and clicks he's gone. He has to start from all over again. To get rid of this problem many web-developers implement their lists/combo-box in ways where one has to click > select and move options from left-to-right and those on the right-side are the ones which are being selected by users. But this plugin will make your life as a developer and users life much easier by not dropping down the selected option each time they select another. Basically this will help many users who are less-friendly with computers and web in general and this plugin development with jQuery came in mind just out of need for such a plugin who can do so and as per my knowledge so far we don't have such plugin available for any javascript library.

Learning from the past experiences, this plugin will support accessibility from the beginning. Yes, there is a keyboard support too.

To use DG Magnet Combo plugin just add following code in your javascript:

$(document).ready(function(){
	$("#my_list").dgMagnetCombo();
});

See live demo here or goto github repository to download or fork.

Update: Plugin updated to 1.1 with following changes: Read the rest of this entry »

Windows 7 gives browser choice in Europe

I never thought that Microsoft would do this. Recently while browsing over the Internet I came across a story that Microsoft is offering browser choice in Europe..! Yes, all those competitors of Internet Explorer. :)

Microsoft offers browser choice to users in Europe

Microsoft offers browser choice to users in Europe

It's good that 10 other browsers except IE and Firefox are getting exposure as well. To be honest I haven't heard of 3 names from this list and they are SRWare IRON, Lunascape and FlashPeak.

So willingly or unwillingly Microsoft is giving the open choice to users...:)

Similar to what Google Chrome does now a days, asks users for making a choice from Google, Yahoo! or Bing as the default search engine..!

Google Chrome - asking user choice of search engine after installation

Google Chrome - asking user choice of search engine after installation

Anyway as long as browsers and their browsers are concerned users will usually stick to one once they are happy with it with basics (the normal users which are less technical). While developers and specially web-developers need to deal with various breed of them. I consider desktop-applications and their developers little lucky in this area. (Though the fact is  - for many software vendors it's difficult to make and test their software even in various flavors of Windows only.)

Flock – The Social Networking browser says Hi to Chrome, bye to Firefox

Firefox vs Chrome? Yes or No..!

Firefox vs Chrome? Yes or No..!

Friends, the War of browsers has always been very exciting. I have been using Flock at my home PC for quite sometime now (probably since version 0.8 or earlier while it was using Mozilla Firefox at it's core..!).

Yes, the NEWS is Flock - The Social Networking Browser showed it's love towards Chrome by selecting Google's Chromium project as base to build their next-generation browsing experience. Yes, Flock said bye to Mozilla Firefox.

Using Chromium as a base has given a decent boost to Flock and the sidebar gives even better social networking experience with integration with services like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube and I am sure more and more services will be added as new Flock gets mature.

You and Flocks Win..!

You as a User win with Flock :)

To me the old Firefox based Flock had better User Interface or theme, it was a sparkling theme with silver and light blue shades (default one). But now it has obviously decent theme and better and faster performance, which is what finally matters. So here we as users win along with Flock, those who choose to flock on social web with Flock. If you want to see the glimpse of old Mozilla-core based Flock see my previous post back in July 2009 introducing some exciting features of Flock - The Social Browser.

Here is the quoted paragraph from the Clayton Stark's blog post on official Flock Beta Blog about why Chromium was inevitable as a platform of choice for The Social Networking Browser. Read the rest of this entry »

Firefox 3.5 and CSS effects change we will see

Firefox 3.5 claims to be 2 times faster than it's 3.x version which is a great news as now every browser is in the race to get fastest Javascript execution engine in it's core.

So I got my Firefox 3.x alert claiming that newer and better version 3.5 is available and it's a recommended upgrade. Just now before couple of hours I have updated to Firefox 3.5 using it's auto-updater feature and when it restored previously open tabs and I noticed first change in this blogs title fonts.

Here, in below image you can see blog post title which has taken "Lucida Grande" as Font to render and it was same for rest of the browsers as well. Because Internet Explorer, Safari and Chrome all display it in the same manner.

Blog Title in FireFox-3.x with Font-Family: "Union","Lucida Grande","Lucida Sans Unicode",Arial,Helvetica

Well now let's see what Firefox 3.5 has to offer with similar Font-Family attribute?
